'Amphora' is one of a volume of concrete poems I am working on that give voice to characters from Ancient Greek and Roman myths. These stories still have currency in Western European and colonial culture; they are used as a mark of higher learning and given status as supposedly universal expressions of human suffering and love. The way the use of classical myths makes some parts of the history of Western expansionism invisible and makes other aspects of Western culture as it has developed over time seem inevitable troubles me. I grew up with these stories and the particular aura their status in Western education gives them. The concrete poems in this volume are my means of reckoning with this troubling history.
